(That Have Nothing to do with Looking Better)
When most people think about the reasons they exercise (or at least the reasons they think they ought to), they think about losing weight, building muscle, or hitting a new personal record. Those are all great goals, but they’re not the reasons that keep me coming back to the gym year after year.
Here are three reasons I exercise that have nothing to do with appearance or athletic performance.
1. Exercise Makes Me a Better Person
Remember that scene from Legally Blonde? Elle Woods in her pink suit, fully assured of her client’s innocence for one simple reason:
“Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.
Happy people don’t kill their husbands. They just don’t.”
It’s funny because it’s true.
Regular exercise is one of the best stress relievers available. It improves mood, reduces anxiety, and helps us handle the daily frustrations of life with a little more patience and a lot more grace.
When I skip workouts for too long, I’m not just less fit—I become more stressed, less patient, and honestly, not nearly as pleasant to be around.
But when I take the time to exercise, I feel accomplished, satisfied, and it makes me more patient with the people around me. Maybe it’s just easier to celebrate others when I feel like I’ve celebrated myself a little too.
A 2024 study of over 400 college students found that people who regularly participated in a high amount of physical activity experienced better mental health and lowered depression (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10970980/). And wouldn’t we all like to improve our mental health a little? Not just for ourselves, but to show up better for our families when they need us!
Working out isn’t just self-care. It’s people-care.
2. Taking Care of Myself Is One Way I Take Care of My Family
As we get older, people begin to rely on us in different ways.
Our spouses need us. Our children still need us. Our grandchildren definitely need us.
I want to be the grandparent who can babysit, play on the floor, carry groceries, help with yard work, move furniture, travel, and say “yes” when my family needs me.
Neglecting my health doesn’t just affect me. It affects everyone who depends on me.
Staying active gives me the best chance to remain strong, independent, and available for the people I love.
3. Someone Is Watching
Whether we realize it or not, we’re setting an example every day.
Little brains are constantly soaking up information that will shape how they understand the world as they grow up. When my granddaughters watch me exercise, when they hear me talk about why I choose to, what are they learning about the world they live in?
I hope they see that taking care of their body isn’t about vanity. It’s about honoring the life you’ve been given and being healthy enough to show up for the people you love.
When they see me choosing to make movement a priority in my 40s, 50s, and beyond, I hope they’ll grow up believing that exercise is simply part of life—not something you do for a few years when you’re young.
Healthy habits can become a family legacy.
Your “Why” Matters
If your only motivation to exercise is a number on the scale or the way you look in the mirror, it can be difficult to stay consistent.
But when your reason is to improve your mood, be there for your family, and set an example for future generations, missing workouts becomes a much bigger decision.
At Hammock Coast CrossFit, we believe fitness is about building a life you love—not just building a better body.
